What should a male writer keep in mind while writing women characters?

If you're a man writing a woman character, do not write like a man. Become that woman character.

Keep yourself in her shoes. You cannot justify her character if you would write her as a man. A man writing a woman character as a man will never connect with the women readers.

Women think differently, about different things, sometimes overthink too, and almost think all the time, and read too much into the lines. Use this trait.

Observe women around yourself in real life. Your mother. Your wife. Your sister. Your daughter. Your friends and colleagues. Observe how real and actual women behave.

Who men thinks women are, and who women actually are very different. A real woman is very different from the imaginary woman that exists in a man's mind.

Write a strong woman character whose character is developed from start to end. Character shouldn't remain stagnant.

Everything a woman do or thinks isn't about men. A woman have thousands of thoughts. Women think about family, friends, career, society, entertainment, problems and a lot more stuff. Women focus more on their internal emotional. So give the character a fullness by making her do several things in book and show her different sides.

The beauty of a woman lies in the pain she carry in her heart silently. Focus on that pain.

When writing the sex scenes, again, men and women view sex as completely different. Women are more into it emotionally, they want post-sex intimate time, while men want to take rest. Keep such little differences in mind.

Do not focus a lot on her physical beauty and her clothes or her assets. Doing that once or twice in the whole book should be enough. An author should not project sexuality in the book when it isn't necessary.

Your woman protagonist should give out a strong message.

Make her crack some jokes. Make her clumsy a little bit. Normal and real women crack jokes, laugh freely and are often time clumsy, not always the perfect lady. Don't try to make her look too perfect. That will ruin her character.

Keep her simple and tangled, all at the same time. Because that is how most women are.
